Spanish Prostitutes Facing Fines

The world's oldest profession is facing some obstacles in some cities in Spain. Malaga City and Alicante are taking steps to ban street prostitution by imposing fines for sexual practices carried out in public areas.

Prostitution per say is not illegal in Spain but the city fathers are getting around this by proposing a local bylaw not referring to prostitution, but outlawing or sanctioning sexual activity in public.

Sex Workers Want Brothels

An activist Chinese sex worker who goes by the name "Hooligan Sparrow" has been detained after an unusual protest to demand legalized prostitution.

Prostitution is rampant in China despite an official ban since the Communists took power six decades ago.

The protest was held in the central Chinese city of Wuhan last Thursday. The group, holding red umbrellas, carried banners and collected signatures urging an end to discrimination against sex workers.

Ireland Has Brothel Problem

Ireland has a brothel problem according to statistics from the Department of Justice. And the city of Limerick is overtaking Dublin in its number of brothels.

Prostitution is also increasing in counties such as Wexford, Monaghan, Roscommon and Longford.

There has been a crackdown on prostitution with 28 brothels shut down this year. Brothels were discovered in 14 different counties in the first half of this year, compared to six counties for the entire 2009 year.

A spokesperson for a women's group blames mobile phones and the internet for the increase.
